I needed some change so I stopped at Mid West credit union and Wells Fargo looking to get change but as I don't have a account there they won't deal with me. I understand the credit union a little but the other is a bank. I will never put a penny of my hard earned money in those banks. I feel if you can't do a simple favor to people unless you are making money off them that is a crappy way to do business.

I have been with chase for 5 years and never had any problems. I have stopped at few diff Chase banks and they never ask if I have a account and always treat me very well. Only reason I didn't stop a Chase was it was 5 miles up the road and I thought I could save some time but turns out I wasted time.

OK rant over. That just hit me the wrong way and wanted to share.

You mean you had a $50 bill and wanted ones and fives or something, and they refused to break your larger bill for change? That's pretty stinky, if so.

Why should they? You're not a customer and making change for you takes time away from the people who ARE customers.

I see the point but the time lost to paying customers is already happened I was standing in line.

If it is your policy to not help non customers that's fine just post a sign saying so.

All companies have customer service while that is normally their customers it also includes potential customers. They lost this potential customer and my family. I know they don't care about those accounts but after a while they will see it in there bottom line and do care about that.

And maybe they should be nice to people because that is how you grow business.

You guys are funny. I had a career in banking and let me tell you; people were always looking for freebies. Of course the big threat was that if you didn't roll over on the requested freebies, they would move their accounts elsewhere. It isn't too hard to figure if a customer's individual relationship is worth it or not. Our policy was to give everyone a fair shake and end up with enough profit to keep the doors open and the shareholders happy. (they rarely were)
One thing did throw me a few years back though. I went into a bank to buy a money order with cash. They said they won't sell me one unless I had an account with them. I was amazed, my bank would never be that dumb.

    They are not a charity.
Who said anything about charity? I don't follow...

    They lost this potential customer

that is how you grow business.
    And that's a big deal.

In the place I work, people have come in to make change to go a few doors down and spend it at a place that won't break big bills. Big deal.
It's less than a minute...of building a rapport that will bring that person (and/or their friends & family) in to do buying/trading in the future.
What's the problem? Why should anyone just take their ball and bat and go home when it just cuts them off at their own knees? Meh. Whatevs

I used the word charity because: by doing work for free for a non customer could be considered Charity.

    Webster's dictionary defines "Charity" as:
    Definition of CHARITY

    1
: benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity

    2
a : generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering; also : aid given to those in need b : an institution engaged in relief of the poor c : public provision for the relief of the needy

    3
a : a gift for public benevolent purposes b : an institution (as a hospital) founded by such a gift

They're hardly freebies. As a bank customer, I routinely pay banks for the privilege of letting them use my money. I pay a per-transaction fee at the ATM when I withdraw money, I pay a teller fee if I talk to a teller more than twice a month, I pay a monthly fee if I don't let the bank use enough of my money every month, I pay to be allowed to pay my bills electronically, etc. I'm not looking for freebies. I'm looking for value. With a checking account that earns no interest, I'm basically paying the bank for everything and the only thing I get in return is the convenience of not having to mail an envelope full of cash to my mortgage company.

Yep. My bank just told me they were, as a "service" to me, converting my free checking accounts to ones that required me to direct deposit $300 a month in order to avoid $7.95 in monthly charges per account.

I can appreciate good customer relations, and making change is a low-cost way to earn some goodwill (and possibly earn a new customer), but I certainly wouldn't EXPECT them to do it.

ARE YOU A SOCIALIST? DO YOU ADVOCATE GOVERNMENT REGULATION?

Seriously the banks are there to make money. No different than a grocery store, liquor store or cigar shop.

Why would you expect them to provide you with a service (that costs them money) when you are not one of their customers?

Scutter, you seriously need a better bank.

I have no issues with the two banks I do personal banking with, they treat me all right. I do NOT understand some of the asshattery that occurs in business banking. Don't want to loan money to start-up? Fine. No worries. Oh, now you want to establish a banking relationship with us? M'kay, we'll look at your credit line offering. What, you won't extend a credit line without a personal guarantee from the partners? Go **** yourself! Why would I pay you interest on a credit line I'm personally guaranteeing? I'll just use my own money and pay myself interest you asshat!
