A good place to start is to look at the comercialy made 72hour kits.

    Emergency Survival Kits

Emergency kits and 72 Hour Kits - Emergency Essentials

Then you can make a list of what you need with the commercial kit as a reference.

    Dry Clothes
    Rain gear - Poncho
    Water & purification
    Food
    knife, multitool
    small survival kit
    First aid kit
    light

That's just off the top of my head very basic list.

A good source for small stuff for the BOB is: index1

    Lots of neat BOB stuff.

Go to : Emergency Essentials - Be Prepared Emergency Preparedness Food Storage (Emergency Essentials).
There you will find all kinds of information and even "check-list" forms that you can print out (At least 3 BO bags - home, auto, work - keep an extra copy with contact info in a seperate place)

You can add things YOU need, or ignore things you wouldn't use. Adjust to fit your needs.

Also read "Insite Articles" and "Recipes". Great read - lots of info.
    Good luck.

It depends on where you intend to go? Are you planning to get your family of 4, 50 miles away? Or is it just you, that needs to get across town?

Personal List (this is my side bag, not my "expeditionary pack")
1 loadout Rifle/pistol ammunition (210 rifle, 45 pistol) as my expeditionary bag (dropped upon hostile interaction) will hold another full load out.
    2 knives
first aid kit (including my "perforation" pack+hemostat)
1 day of food (big pack has 7, usually rice and vitamen tablets)
Bottle of NATO white phosphourus matches
Bottle/water filter w/backup iodine tablets (yecH!)
Patches for bag (1 medical/1 press)
5 glow sticks (for raves and mystifying the drunk)
    1 Maglite Flashlight (D-cell model) or L neck mil-flashlight
1 book (Kijiki, or Record of Ancient Matters, Shintoism stuff)
    Cellular with 2 extra batteries
1 Digital camera (not terribly important)
1 brown tarp (cover at night)
1 wool blanket (hey, it gets cold, I camp alot without a tent to get into the groove of outdoor stuff)
1 9lb sledge (with "Key to the City" written on handle with magic marker)
1 Israeli gas mask with 2 filters
    1 lenstatic compass
Extra pair of skivies and cleaning materials (guy's gotta smell good when saving the day:D)
    Corkscrew
1 bottle Yellow Tail wine (white, clean finish)

This loadout is generally for a short haul. It does not detail what my "expeditionary pack" gets into (usually more food and an actual tent, lots of other stuff).

I run 5 miles every day (except on weekends) with my pack, and a PVC tube weighted with sand to the weight of my loaded AR. Admittedly, when I feel like, meh! I run with just the small bag (sans some of the unnecessary items, like the booze).

Hey, if I win a situation, I deserve a treat. If someone kills me (good for them, not a terriblely difficult task though), then they get a treat. Not too many people think for the well being of their enemies huh?

    I kan haz GLOX? Hehe!

Hey, lewtz is a part of life. Too day SHTF cant equal Final Fantasy. Be getting gil for hours!:D Defeat an enemy, get their stuff. Might was well be good stuff.

BOB update, the "key to the city" now resides in my truck of the car as an anti-material weapon. That lady getting attacked in Indy by the trailer trash teenager has me worried. They mess with me, they get to visit the body shop.

    In order:

clothes, shelter, first aid, water, fire & light, food, tools, documents.

I actually wrote a booklet... thinking about publishing it... more geared toward a 72-hour kit booklet then a BOB booklet, though.

Kludge: Sounds good! Three days in my mind is for a small bag, should get most folks out of trouble. My big bag has about a week and a half, but thats for a different purpose :D. A BOB booklet, also detailing things like, basic survival, how to use the things in your bag (heck, my gas mask was difficult, not for everyone, but its something I put it, but had to learn to use, such as clearing it and etc.). How to start a fire with wet wood, purifying water/distilling water with a poncho, how to stay warm and dry, etc.., should all be in there! :D

It is specifically not written as a survival guide... there are plenty of good books on that subject already...

What you should have so you can start a fire with wet wood, can purify water, can stay warm/dry... and enough explanation so you know why... that's what's in it.

72 hours is chosen because that's how long it takes for people to get organized and come help you in a disaster.
