Anything that comes from the government isn't free - it came from taxes. That means you paid for it, or someone else did.

That's the part the Sanderistas are latched on. The "someone else" generally being a vague social strata defined as "the rich" though they can't really peg where it's at. They usually settle on the 1%, but have no idea what you need to make to be in that. Sometimes it's as broadly defined as pretty much anyone working a full time job over minimum wage.

I think the takers generally like socialism more than the givers do.

I'm having an interesting discussion on another message board. Basically, I did some back of the envelope calculations. We could give everyone in this country over the age of 18 $2,500 a month (30k/year), cancel all other "mandatory" spending (SS, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.), and SAVE $200 BILLION. And that is everyone, you, me, my wife, your kid, everyone over the age of 18.

Oh, how about we stop all those programs, stop collecting the taxes that pay for them, and instead of giving people money just not take it from them in the first place?

In the end giving everybody that 30k still means we're taking 30k away from other people.

But where are the opportunities for graft and controlling others in that?

Who did that 30K belong to before it was taken from them and given to someone else? At some point don't you think the givers will get tired of the takers taking? Said another way, eventually, you'll run out of other people's money.

I remember asking my mom when I was maybe 8 years old why we just didn't print more money to give to everyone. Turns out I was a ****ing prodigy.

I'm not saying it is ideal, I'm just saying that it would be better than what we are doing now. Plus, it makes the process more transparent. Rather than the Medis sucking money into a black hole of bureaucracy, or SS getting papered over, or SNAP or WIC, it would be simply done. I'm not even throwing in the cost of bureaucratic savings. Those people are losing more than the 30k now. This plan lets them keep (ideally, of course) $200 BILLION. If you told everyone who is currently paying (actually, currently paying, not just paying and getting it back at the end of the year) that they could keep 200B of their money, or leave well enough alone and let the government have it, I think it would be an easy sell, and a step in the right direction.
