I know it's a NO-NO (legally speaking) to take a hand gun into IL period unless you are just driving through the state to get to another state where you can legally possess a handgun & even then it needs to be in a secure container with no ammo in the container and not loaded. However let's toss that whole topic out the window since my question revolves around long guns.

There is an Appleseed in Bonefield, IL (2010 Bonfield, IL Appleseed Information) which I migth attend (not to thrilled of going over to IL period) but I have been to that range before and it's nice. In any case for appleseed you need a .22 rifle but I'm clueless on long guns, non-IL residents, and the IL gun laws.

Can I take my long gun to IL (that range)?
How do I have to transport it?
    (locked container, unloaded, etc..)

    Thanks!

Unloaded, with a trigger or cable lock, in a case, with ammunition stored separately will get you in compliance with any and all statutes. This is likely overkill - but when traveling to or through Illinois, I've always exercised great caution.

Non-residents must be legally eligible to possess
or acquire firearms and ammunition in their state of
residence. It is recommended that in order to be in
compliance with all statutes, non-residents transport
    all firearms:
    1. Unloaded, and
    2. Enclosed in a case, and
    3. Not immediately accessible or broken down in a

    nonfunctioning state.

The Criminal Code refers to “a case, firearm carrying
box, shipping box, or other container.” However, the
Wildlife Code is more specific, defining case as
    “a
container specifically designed for the purpose
of housing a gun or bow and arrow device which
completely encloses such gun or bow and arrow
device by being zipped, snapped, buckled, tied, or
otherwise fastened, with no portion of the gun or

    bow and arrow device exposed.”
