Just like the title says I'd like to know the recipe to copy Federal Gold Medal Match ammo in 168gr for 308. I'm running a DPMS 308B that absolutely loves the stuff and I'd like to start making my own ammo for less money. I've been reloading for years and as good as factory ammo is in some cases there's nothing like home brewed ammo. I appreciate any help.

Interesting question, while I am assuming Federal match cases, Federal match primers and Sierra 168gr Match King bullets, the powder may very well not be canister grade.
I have also had good luck with GMM, however, for a little distance looking at shooting the 175gr SMK when make it out west again (can't shoot the 338LM all day ;-)

The closest me and a buddy had come was with reloader 15, you're much better off experimenting your own. You'll most likely get the same or better groupings. I had good luck matching the chronospeeds with my bolt gun.

I'll definately work up my own loads, but I just want to narrow down where to get started with the powder. From what I've been finding out RE15 & IMR 4895 seem to be the most popular with varget just shortly behind them.

I stopped Varget when it was hard to find, tried Reloader 15 for a bit and it became hard to find. I ordered IMR 4895 (think I'm down to 20 lbs now) for 308, 223, and 06 for the garand and 03a3.

Its hard to find one powder for most of what you're doing, 4895 is as close as I need to be.

I used to use Varget all the time, then I couldn't find it and I switched to Ramshot TAC. The TAC is pretty good, but not quite where the varget is.

    GMM Recipe....

Iremember reeading somewhere on SniperCentral the mystery powder was IMR4064. There were a few threads about the powder over there. I've been using Varget and can find it at Atterbury with just about every other powder. $21 a lb. or $135 for 8 lbs.

Don't know if I can post loads here, if not, moderators please chastise me.
IMR 4895 - 42.5 grains, Sierra 168 BTHP Match, Winchester Case, Primer whatever I have laying around at the time. Shoots .500 all day out of my Rem 700 5R. Only shot 10 rounds through my AR-10 all were within an inch. Ordered some Military primers to load for it because of possble slam fire.
Was given this load from a friend who showed me his target - .213 out of his 5R, why mess with success. Have no idea what the velocity is,also his AR-10 shoots .500 with this load almost all the time. Have heard some sucess stories with RL-15. Actually say a guy shoot one hole with his Savage FP using BL-C2 and the 168 gr. Hornady Match bullet. Although he hasn't been able to achieve that again he still shoots less than an inch all day. I don't know his load, just knew the powder and bullet he was using. I see no reason to reinvent the wheel, this load works , doesn't need fixing. Never have shot the FGMM so don't iknow how is compares for me.

    Good luckl.

imo you are better off finding your own load. mabye use fed match primers and the 175 smk as a starting point

    ^____ this.

Working up someone else's pet load will never give you the kind of information you'd get by working up loads with several different powders. You could be shooting .600 all day long and think "well this is the best i've ever seen or i'll ever get from this gun" and move on to another project - meanwhile .200 additional accuracy may lay in that unopened can of powder you've got on your shelf.

You can buy a pound of powder for the price of 20 rounds of GMM. - and once you've got something worked up, you'll have at least another 100 rounds worth left in the jug.

    Ain't it a deal ? :D

I have been using IMR 4064, CCI Primers, LC Brass and Sierra Match King 168 BTHP bullets. This is my primary load for shooting my Remington 700 .308. I have only put a new axiom stock and millet scope and have been shooting .500 or less at a 100 yard zero. And on a couple of occasions I have threaded a needle at 600 yards "BULLS EYE". with this load.

Well on my last trip out to the range I tested out my varget loads. One load in particular showed some real potential, but I haven't had time to measure the group yet so I won't brag it up. The load was Rem Brass, Win primers, 168gr Sierra and 43.0 of varget.

42.5gr IMR4064 in my rifle, give or take, work up in your rifle. This gives me ~2650fps from a 24" barrel. My rifle seems to like 2550fps a better, but I'm still working on it. A wildcat + hunting season + cold weather got in the way.

Both my Savage 12-F/TR and my 10-FP like 42.0 gr. of IMR 4064 with either the 180 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip, or the 168 gr. Sierra Matchking. Both guns will cut one ragged hole all day for as long as you want to sit there and pull the trigger. Bill T.

Now BillT that's almost cheating. Of course a savage F/TR & a 10fp are going to shoot that good. :rockwoot:

I have to admit that I am totally jealous of the F/TR especially. It's hard to beat a good savage rifle. How far to you shoot yours? Have you ever been up to Young's Longshot? If not, I think you owe it to yourself to make the trip with those rifles.

What scopes are you running on those, they look like Bushnell tacticals but I can't tell what models.

I'm running both out to 600 yards. If I need to go further I switch to the .300 Win. Mag. in both the Savage 110 FCP-K, or else the Kimber 8400 Police Tactical. Both are good 1,000 yard weapons. Again, both run Bushnell 3200 Elite Tactical Models. These are some of the best scopes Bushnell has produced yet. Bill T.
