"He was cleaning his gun in the kitchen when it fired...".

Drop the mag, clear the chamber, visually check if the chamber is clear, check it again with your finger to confirm. If you are feeling tired or distracted check it a third time. It doesn't take long, certainly less time than an ER visit and coming up with a story that doesn't make you look like an idiot.

I still have never figured out how you get your finger in front of the muzzle while manipulating a gun. I see all of these NDs and people shooting themselves in the hand and, for the life of me, can't imagine how you would be holding it that your left hand gets in front. :dunno:

It can happen to anybody. I like to think I'm as safety conscience as the next guy but I'm reluctant to ridicule someone, call them idiots, or whatever because all it takes is some sort of distraction, a lapse in judgement, and you're in the news.

Birds, try this, sit down in the chair at your kitchen table. See how your arms/hands point in toward each other not straight out or away from you?

Now make a "gun" with your right hand and bring your arms up in concert to chest high. See where your left hand is, right in front of your right index "muzzle"? That's how.
