I need to be educated. I am interested in a highly reliable AK type rifle, however I know nothing about the guns other than the general history and rep for reliability. I know there are gotchas though when it comes to buying a good one. My aim would be nothing pretty, form over function and price is always a consideration. What is the best model/type of AK for the best price? Please go into detail about differences and what to look for. Remember I know almost nothing so kinda talk to me like I am a 4 year old. If you have any links to good info please post them I am yearnin to learn, just don't know were to look. Thanks in advance!:)

buy a WASR-10. Just watch for a canted front sight. They are ugly, but they are reliable and accurate enough.

I bought my current one from Classic Arms last year. Dunham's often has them on sale.

Those are great weapons, but seriously, I'd just as well have two WASRs for the price of one of those. (and I actually do);) If you carefully select a WASR, it'll take an ass kicking and still keep going, just like the more expensive models. I would feel quite comfortable spending $350-$400 on a WASR all damn day long. Mine are dependable to the letter, and although I would love to have some milled AKs, I truly don't need them, what I have works just fine.:twocents:

I recommend a Maadi (Egyptian) ARM if you can find one. Just stay away from Century imported Maadi's. The Russians built a plant in Egypt, and they produced AK's for the Egyptians. They are reliable, as AK's are known for. However, they are some of the more accurate, and have a good trigger. I have shot WARS's, and I was less then impressed. My .02

Have you checked out the AK rifle "show and tell" picture section yet? There is quite a variety and about 32 pages worth of AK ideas and some really sharp looking rifles.

    Good luck in your choice.

I've got a Hungarian kit built on a Armory USA rx, an AMD-65 FEG rcvr'ed, and a VZ58(2008.)

The Arsenals are cream-of-the-crop. The WASRs are kinda considered bottom of the barrel *BUT*, mag wobble and canted sight aside, they tend to run as well as others.

The AMDs and VZs are both available for <$400 from outlets like J&G, Centerfire Systems and Classicarms. Two caveats to the above: the AMD from the distributor needs US mags to be 922r compliant unless you swap out some parts (I did.) The VZ only LOOKS like an AK but shares no common component other than the cartidge - still, it is a well built MILLED RECEIVER that is 1 lb lighter than stamped AKs.

There is a Hungarian on the Exchange right now for $500 that I consider a GREAT deal if I only had the scratch. Not in the cards for me right now...

Good luck! I'm no AK expert but there is enough knowledge on this board to answer any questions you may have. Alternately, AKFiles AKForum and the AK subsection of AR15.com are all quite good for just researching past discussions.

EDIT TO ADD: And Bradis had a nice deal last week on some Gaili/Golanis.

    I'm partial to saigas...

I like PSLs a lot too if you're willing to invest the time in them. Then again, you're going to have to convert a saiga as well.

For a first AK, a WASR is fine, for someone wanting more however, the saiga is the creme of the crop. Forget arsenal rebranding the rifles and installing a few parts you could easily install yourself. Just do it yourself, and learn your weapon inside and out.

What? Are you the regional rep for these things or something?:D
Seriously though, I was really close to buying one, and went to the LGS to inquire about the transfer for me, and they had an M44 on the rack, thus killing my budget for the VZ. I will get one someday soon.

No, I just want everybody to know there are options out there besides AK, AR, SKS, etc when it comes to combat carbines in intermediate cartridges, and [STRIKE]I believe [/STRIKE] I know the VZ platform is the best out there. I wish Century (or somebody) would pay me to rep a gun I am this crazy about though. That would be awesome. Honestly, my intentions aside from trying to educate the general gun buying public on this rifle is I hope that the aftermarket swells a little bit, and provides some unique things, although the aftermarket is decent for them already.

Saiga's all the way!! After all, anything else is just a copy, IMO. I mean, they ARE made at the Kalashnikov factory.

    Amen brother.

Just built this one over lunch.

34" OAL 308 chambered AK action with a heavy duty receiver and 16" heavy barrel. Hell, a PKAS for good measure too.

Doesn't get much better than that, just wish they made a saiga in x54r. I guess 308 will do though.

My PSL just has something going on with it that defys words though:
