Can anyone explain how this is done and what the advantages are?

Gunsmith cuts chamber, increases case volume and sometimes increases the efficiency of burn. Results vary by caliber.

Improved in most cases means 3 things.
1 a factory cartridge can be fire formed to the improved dimention .
2 the improved case will be of higher volumn.
3 in most cases the improved case will have a sharper shoulder angle for a more positive head space.

"Ackley Improved " is a form of changing the bullet case.. the rifle has to be rechambered to fit the AI round..

on some old design chamberings , the neck taper lead to case stretching , 22 hornet for example,
going with an AI version gives more powder capacity & reduces the stretching, leading to longer case life..
