    So, it sounds like Blakchawk and Eagle were pretty big competitors?

    Yep. Eagle is/was an innovator that makes/made its gear here in the States; Blackhawk started out strong, but quickly devolved into a rip-off company (many of their designs are curiously similar to Eagle's) that sources much of its stuff from overseas (Vietnam, primarily). But they also put huge amounts of money into flashy advertising and their gear is cheap enough that anyone and everyone can carry it, which is why you've heard of them.
