I am no doubt sure that the tragic death of Trayvon Martin will be perverted to achieve the end of the antigun crowd. It's not for me to pass judgement on whether the shooting was justified, and I don't want to start a thread that does. None of us were there. One thing is certain, the truth will not come out. We all need to take a minute and pray for both families, and not forget to write an extra check to the NRA ILA so that our lobby will have what it needs to undo whatever is about to be done.

God bless the Martin and Zimmerman families and God bless America.

Yeah and I saw The Rev. Al Sharpton on GMA this morning beating his drum. No matter what really happened this guy will probably get Railroaded. They have already made the police chief step aside, at least for the moment. I'll keep them all in my prayers.

The sad thing is this one incident could be worse for our rights than Laughner's shooting. Yes, one person getting shot could be more of a wet blanket than the attempted assassination of a member of Congress. I am not going to discuss the race issue at work here, but ultimately that is the what is pressing this.

Unfortunately tragedy happens. This was not a good shoot, but for whatever reason, I genuinely believe Zimmerman thought he was in danger. My sympathy goes out to the family of the victim, and to Zimmerman. I can not possibly imagine how it must feel to have felt the need to defend himself, then to have the victim not be the threat he thought he was, then to get harassed by EVERYONE. Now what? Even the President of the United States has condemned his actions! He can not be given a fair trial, so at this point we can only hope he will not be arrested. If he ultimately is, I will be contributing to his legal defense fund, not because I support his actions or even because I sympathize with them, but because no one should be dragged through the mud like that. No one should be accused of a crime they have not been charged with by public figures, much less political figures, and especially not political figures within the Justice System or the the Executive Branch.

Only one thing can be certain, Zimmerman's actions resulted in more than the death of an innocent man, they also resulted in the death of due process.

Unfortunately, the media have already clouded everyone's opinion on this and what really happened, even if it's reported, will never be taken into account. Sharpton and Calipso Louie have made sure of that.

What sticks in my mind, however is this.. If Zimmerman was afraid for his life, why did he continue to follow even after he was instructed not to by the 911 operator?

Did he instigate the altercation, them finding himself in on the losing end, resort to deadly force?

The media botched it, however, by dragging in race. That will become the central issue, and if they're not careful, they will polarize the electorate prior to November.

I predict an acrimonious summer with lots of blather by Al Sharpton, and Obama cornered by the race issue (he could have taken the high road but didn't).

Obama will retain his core constituency, and will poll about as well as Jesse Jackson, as many of his prior supporters vote with their feet.

While the media loves these race stories, two decades after OJ and Rodney King I think most Americans are just sick of it.

I know I'm sick of it. They turn it into a race issue for ratings, most people can wrap their brains around race issues rather then the truth.

Exactly! Most of the general public are not racist, but for some reason any time there is a shooting involving a white person -shooting someone that is black, or mexican,, or w/e...he is suddenly and swiftly a racist. The age ol stigma of all whites being racist needs to stop. And you can mainly think the media for that. Things go FUBAR all the time, grow up and understand that the world is not bunnies and butterflies like the media want you to think. I agree with most of you, we WERE NOT THERE and were not in that situation. We, like most Americans, only hear what the media will release. The thing that will probably chastise the shooter is the 911 call. He actively pursued the victim to engage him... and by definition the kid would have been within his rights to defend himself. Once things turned for the worse....the aggressor used deadly force in a scenario he initiated. Once again, I do not know all the facts nor was I there. Just sounds suspicious to me, and I am sure he will get ripped apart as a result. Sad day for all parties involved. :noway:

    O, really?

Then again, the histories of violence among those involved is among the best of evidence. One was told to run home and be safe, another was told NOT to exit and chase with a gun. I mean, Skittles ARE dangerous weapons when propelled at sufficient speeds. BTW, I have NO dark blue or black matching shirts and trousers in my closets. I hope Zim turns himself in to fedaral protection, and doesn't get lynched. Hope he fares better than Lee Harvey Oswald did. EBG
    We shall see.

It can just as easily be argued that the shot killed a violent attacker and prevent serious bodily injury to Zimmerman.

‘‘Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.’’

A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks.

This whole situation is FUBAR! A kid running the streets at night (where's the parenting), a guy who fancies himself to be batman (douchbag). It's a sad situation that could have been avoided a thousand different ways. My only hope is what the OP is worrying about; let's hope and pray this situation doesn't affect our 2nd amendment rights.

Whenever you see the predictable media spin on one of these stories, just pretend you are living in China, with the party line being forced down your throat every day. Soon you will see that it is better to live in the US with our media because we have freedom of the press, er... (I'm thinking...)

"I think all of us have to do some soul-searching to figure out how did something like this happen," said Obama. "And that means that we examine the laws and the context for what happened as well as the specifics of the incident."
This statement from Osocialist says it all IMO. This tragedy will be used to re-examine the current gun laws and used to demonize all gun owners as superhero/vigilante wannabes that are just itching for any opportunity to shoot someone. I mean that's the whole reason we all carry right . The fact that a life was lost and another ruined and the turmoil that the families on both sides are going through will be completely lost in the media circus to make this the biggest story of the year. The antis will use this to make sure that a thousand no sense gun laws be passed to protect the innocent from us vigilantes. I can guarantee that the Brady bunch are still wetting their panties from the excitement of how they can use this to stomp on the 2A. The fact of the matter is that only two people know what really happened that night, one is dead and the other, being factual or not, has been painted as a trigger happy racist itching for a confrontation. Bottom line-Nothing good will come of this.

I thought it was innocent before proven guilty? Our media does not live by this. Unfortunately there are a lot of Americans that have forgotten this as well.

We the people need to take our country back..

I went to the first link and read the short piece. Out of curiosity, I followed the "more" link and found myself on Brady's site. I read a few blogs on gun control and its effect on crime. I read about huge quantities of guns moving across states borders with lesser gun laws to those with more strict laws. I read about how the Mexican cartels thank the US gun shops for being their main supplier of "automatic" weapons. What I did not read was any kind of data or statistics that validated any of their claims. It appeared from what I read, that they rely on sensationalism in lieu of facts. While I believe that they are sincere in their beliefs, I also believe that they are misguided and have fantasies of a utopia where man has evolved into something other than man... I cannot get the stench of the site from my nostrils...

That shot killed a child and injured every gun owner in America.
I look for BAD to come out of this. I pray I am wrong.

This event was/is truly a trajedy. Upon hearing/reading any occurrence, I cannot help but put the event in context with the number of 313,000,000(current US pop.) or 200,000,000(est. guns in america excluding military and LE). If we step outside our small communal mindset and look at the event in the larger country mindset, we see that statistically, the probability that a NWC shooting and killing an innocent man is a relatively small number(As I was not there and thus do not have the facts of the confrontation, I am not arguing justified or unjustified, my personal feelings aside). I liken it to humans contracting rabbies per year. While the 3-8 cases per year is scary if you are one of the 3-8, statistically, it is relatively insignificant. I am not saying that this shooting is insignificant. I am saying that to make any kind of public policy based on this one case would be unfortunate.
