Campus free speech legislation reintroduced in Congress

The "Free Right to Expression in Education" (FREE) Act would prohibit "free speech zones" on America's public college and university campuses.

Book-banning university now threatening professors who talk to the press

After banning a controversial book, Franciscan University of Steubenville is now threatening faculty who speak anonymously to the press about the book-banning incident — or anything else.

Syracuse University finally concedes that its free speech promises are worthless

In court documents recently filed by Syracuse University in response to a student’s lawsuit alleging free speech and due process violations, SU admits that it does not promise its students free speech. The admission is the culmination of SU’s disappointing history of violating its students’ expressive freedoms.

"During an interview with former FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, CNN host Christiane Amanpour said that Trump supporters chanting "lock her up" qualified as "hate speech" and went as far as suggesting that the government should have banned people from saying it."

"Of course, 'Lock her up' was a feature of the 2016 Trump campaign," Amanpour said. "Do you, in retrospect, wish that people like yourself, the head of the FBI, I mean, the people in charge of law and order – had shut down that language? That it was dangerous potentially, that it could have created violence, that it’s kind of hate speech? Should that have been allowed?"

American media advocating for 1st amendment restrictions, asking a former FBI director about suppressing speech...

The SCOTUS really f***ed up not doing as Barney, an nipping this in the bud.

The Constitution should be enough. This clarification that Government funded schools are required to obey it is welcome.

Private Religious school. Whether we like their policy or not, it IS protected by the 1st amendment.

I do not know the case. On campus, a polite discussion should never be quashed. In the classroom discussion, polite dissent should be encouraged. Instructors who are teaching (not attempting to indoctrinate) should be respected and if necessary be questioned politely.

    What is dissenter?

"Gab" is a site that made a Twitter alternative, with a focus on free speech.

Gab also created Dissenter, which allows anyone that has it as an addon to "comment" on any website/page, again, with a focus on free speech. You're not commenting on a NYT story page where they remove wrongthink, you're able to see a Dissenter GUI instead and discuss the article with other Dissenter users.

People without the addon do not see your comments. It's isolated... which makes the "reports" that Mozilla claims they got a very dubious reason for banning the addon.

In light of Assange's arrest, this seemed appropriate to put in this thread today.

In today's world, not only is real journalism a dying profession, sometimes it will even get you arrested.

5th Cir. revives First Amendment claim against Texas sheriff's office that banned a woman from commenting on their Facebook page after she left a nasty post about the office and a deputy that had been recently killed in the line of duty.

Taken from the district court's decision, here's the Facebook post that got the woman banned:

President Trump met with Jack from Twitter.

    Trump said:
Great meeting this afternoon at the @WhiteHouse with @jack from @Twitter. Lots of subjects discussed regarding their platform, and the world of social media in general. Look forward to keeping an open dialogue!

Thank you for the time. Twitter is here to serve the entire public conversation, and we intend to make it healthier and more civil. Thanks for the discussion about that.

Using your free speech to throw stones from your glass house, and to **** off the people who have the power to serve justice to you.
