Not a lot of details to go on.. Was he taking it out to help his father(or mother..) or was he off on his own "exploring"?

    Pretty small article.
Might have been a good place to state the 4 safety rules he had to violate.

Agree, since Indiana is usually a pretty good state, they could have put, here are the safety rules.
There was almost more information on the headline then the article. I know since he is a juvie, that they cannot publish a couple things, and since the police are investigating. But, yea, there were a lot of safety rules broken. :twocents:

Yes, the boy may need some safety lessons. However, there are not a lot of details and I am inclined to blame the parents. Was the boy familiar with firearms or is he new to them? There are many responsible young men out there but, in general, it is a lot to expect a pre-teen to exercise as much judgment as an adult.

Whenever a loaded firearm is around a child I believe a responsible adult should be near them to supervise. It's accidents like this that result in calls for mandated trigger locks etc.

I think the lesson for the parents here is don't leave a loaded, uncased shotgun in your truck where a child has access to it. Also, don't ask your child to retrieve your loaded, uncased shotgun from your truck.

I love how people/media describe gun discharges like little kids.

"Hey mommy, the milk spilled. It fell over"

    instead of

"Hey mommy, I spilled the milk. I knocked it off the table."
