My idea of a woods gun is something to plink with. So a 10/22 satisfies my definition. Of course I still have my EDC on me. Apparently meth heads are over populated!
I suggest looking at the Kahr CM40. I had one I carried for awhile. Amazing accuracy in a small powerful weapon. I ended up letting it go to a buddy but you can pick them up rather cheap.

Depending on the trip, I will keep a second gun in a discreet concealed location that's easy to access. I really prefer not to store guns in vehicles, but sometimes it can't be avoided. In that case, it's best to be prepared by having a way of locking it inside a locked vehicle. Anything less...
