I have shot the SR9c and have handled the FNS9 Compact. The FN does feel a little chunkier, probably closer to a M&P9c. Both have good triggers, but the FN felt a heavier, maybe 6.5 pounds.
The FN comes with 3 mags but is a little more expensive. You can't deny their quality and durability...
If I had to choose between these 2 I would go with RIA simply for customer service reasons.
I would check out Tisas and Girsan off of Buds as well. The Tisas A2 model with a rail can be had for $415 If you make an offer.
To truly want something different, you need to change action or caliber.
Since you were thinking Beretta 92 but thought the grip was too big, I highly recommend the CZ's. You could get a brushed stainless CZ 75b in your price range and be the envy of most around. The FDE P09 is pretty sweet...
