The 2014 Get Dirt Under Your Fingernails Thread

Cindy, I suggest Captain Jack's Dead Bug Spray. Organic stuff and I've had better luck with it than 7-dust. It's awesome. Haven't had much trouble with bugs this year, my domestic turkeys are wicked pest removers. Unlike my chickens, my turkeys don't devastate the crops themselves... they...

The 2014 Get Dirt Under Your Fingernails Thread

I gave my mother a VINE RIPENED softball sized tomato for her birthday yesterday, surprised I met that goal this year but I retained the title of "Favorite Son" for another year. We canned 49 quarts of green beans last week, should be due for the next batch by Monday. Wife froze 8 loaves of...

The 2014 Get Dirt Under Your Fingernails Thread

Those are pretty sensitive to heat, sun and moisture swings. I think it all boils down to length-of-day more than anything, get that right and the rest takes care of itself. It always amazes me that after I've cut the last of 50-60 heads of broccoli & cauliflower, I'll swing by the store and...

      Critter trouble

Probably just a hot female searching for water since the kits are dehydrating her on hot days, watch for kits to be wandering around today. I have a guy that comes around once a week to pick up my trash bags.

Found a coyote den with pups

You hit the nail on the head and ironically I'm limping today from an encounter with an Anatolian yesterday evening. On my way to check a flock of lambing sheep I notified the producer of my visit and debated whether his daughter should go lock the dog up... we opted to leave him out. After...

Found a coyote den with pups

Thanks guys. Possumpacker, Funny you mention the turkeys. I'll get some things together and spin a turkey-predation related yarn tomorrow... with some cool pictures.

Found a coyote den with pups

Sure. Dogs are a huge factor in sheep depredation in this area, on a more widespread basis than coyotes in my opinion. I've called predators (coyotes, fox, bobcats, lions) in sheep pastures in TX, OK, AZ, CO & WY and coyotes are the main culprit out there, but back here... I think as many...

Found a coyote den with pups

Another fairly accurate post. I take a slightly different viewpoint, but agree that habitat sets a balance. That habitat is being greatly reduced with rising gran prices and coyote, like us, are a high end and adaptable predator. They’re not the kind to “take a loss” so they simply adapt...

Found a coyote den with pups

I will not dispute that coyote populations have expanded into new ranges over the years, but I think the public's perception of coyotes "moving in" is amplified once the coyotes start relaxing. As coyotes inhabit an area over generations they become more aware of their surroundings and the...

Found a coyote den with pups

Everything outlined here in the original post is very accurate and typical of coyote denning. Fairly open, well drained den sites like that are common 2nd & 3rd stage drops for coyotes. The whelping/birth site was probably more secluded in thick cover and better sheltered by overhanging logs...

The 2014 Get Dirt Under Your Fingernails Thread

Man, you guys are making me glad I live in the far southern end of the state. Once coyote season goes out (March 15th) I get busy in the raised beds & gardens. Everything in my gardens is up good and the raised beds have been producing meals for about a week now. Raised beds are full of...

      Aquaponics

From my experience in greenhouses, hydroponics and aquaculture... I think this following posts best answers your question. This whole project will revolve around environmental control. Air circulation and ambient temperatures are critical components in this project, not ancillary...

      Feral Pigs in Indiana

There's good & bad everywhere you go, but some of the most ridiculous and dangerous things I've seen were caused by "New Hunters" or "I'm not really a hunter but.." guys that ventured from the 'burbs to this foreign land of wilderness. Groundhogs, crows, coyotes... you name it, it's amazing...

      Feral Pigs in Indiana

Didn't read the article but saw the Medora incident on the news this week. IDNR has confirmed the pigs came from a farm a couple hundred yards down the road with an incredibly poor excuse for a fence. I guess the donkeys roaming around wouldn't have made the news and got half the state all...

Pressure canner owners: When did you last can? *Poll*

10-4. The Sams I visit most often is just a couple miles from Louisville, KY.

Pressure canner owners: When did you last can? *Poll*

Sorry, have to chime in on this one... unless something changed in the last two weeks case price at Sams has been running $1.32-$1.36 / # for several months. I take a photo of the case-price-lists every time I walk past it, just for reference when I'm elsewhere. I bought two cases @ $1.32/#...

Help me figure out some tracks in snow NO PICTURE'S Sorry

Assuming you know what coon tracks would've looked like... and if they're too large to be a mink.... I'd say Otter.

Yotes are on the move, watch your pets

Just got a text from a landowner 30 minutes ago, a big coyote was standing nose to nose with a domestic dog along the county road. The female coyotes are in estrus so the conflict between coyotes and domestic K9's has begun. It will continue to escelate through the spring as pups are born and...
