Since I will be traveling through redneck states like NY state can I carry my revolver with the cylinder removed and bullets in my suit case. I've read a little on the internet about these redneck states and I'm thinking I would be better to just not take it. Some states in our country are nothing but sad

t is legal to transport a legal firearm through New York under Federal interstate transportation law 18 USC § 926A provided the handgun is unloaded, with neither the firearm nor any ammunition readily accessible from the passenger compartment.

Just Google, that is what I did, has to be unloaded (although, for the life of me why anyone would go to, or through New York, with an unloaded gun is beyond me).....

If you want the route with the least mileage in NY then use 84 east of Scranton.
Its a trade off, and you have to have lived in NYS (New York State) to know that this might not be the best idea. While ostensibly passing through NYS the quickest.

First, realize that traversing downstate, means your going to need to deal with the just as bad lower new england states, Connecticut, and Mass (im not spelling that)..

Second realize that NYS is much like Illinois. A large city next to a body of water at the edge of the state that holds the rest of the state completely hostage.

While longer, Upstate is very rural in most cases, and your going to pass through areas with LEOs that won't be looking or bothering. Downstate LEOs, holy...hell..

it will also give you the option of angling north and giving you passage through Vermont and New Hampshire.. which aren't as 2A freindly as they used to be, but are still fairly lenient. Vermont will even let you carry the revolver loaded.

Had to go to RI. To pic up our last female at the airport. Did a bunch of research. Called several State Trooper phones. Got several different answers. The State Police aren’t the final arbiter of gun law in NY. We stayed out of NY the night before and filled up gas in the morning and completed our business and drove out before nightfall. Good Luck.

No "good" route. Just that was always my preference when just getting through NY state. Lived in NY/NJ for three years and have traveled the state many times over the years visiting family and for business.

NY, NJ, CT, RI are all communist danger zones for firearms owners traveling through those states! The incidents of police crucifying “innocent” gun owners are horrendous. The draconian firearms laws are so confusing and change from state to state up there such that you could be maybe ok in one state with how you transport a firearm but cross a state line, get stopped for a routine traffic violation, get searched by an over zealous cop and you’re facing a felony.

Notwithstanding anything stated in this thread, and with all due respect to everyone, I’d say leave the firearms home locked up in your safe.
    The risks are overwhelming. :dunno:

fair warning, there is very little cell phone coverage in the northern part of Maine, and if you think some of our roads suck, Maine says here, " hold my beer"

We are East coasters, we are all constantly driving or flying back and fourth to Md,VA or DC. We all carry or it gets unloaded and in the trunk, suitcase or backpack if on a motorcycle.
Long guns just stay in the trunk unloaded for the ride.
Used to drive to Killington to ski once or twice a winter, it's all not that big of a deal.
Just follow the laws. It's not like all of those Yankee states don't have gun owners in them already.
Take your pistol and have a great trip.

I used to live there.. and I always liked using the NY 17(Now I-86) and I-88 routes. They were low sparse traffic.

I-86 runs near the Penna border and gives you the option to divert to stop to eat or get gas.
If I were to cross NYS, that is how I would do it I-86 to I-88. Then NYS route 7 direct to Vermont.

I sure would not get trapped on the Thruway, or risk a downstate crossing.

I moved out because I got tired of the damn weather (5 months of winter).
The year it freaking snowed on Halloween, and then the "spring" after.. it snowed on Easter... was the last damn straw. That was 1999.
