bp in whiting

I'm going to be working up there for the next six months, how far away to I need to stay to avoid a major likelihood of gunfire in the parking lot of my hotel?

There isn't anywhere in Whiting proper to stay, but Hammond isn't bad. Personally I avoid East Chicago at night. I can't think of anything on Indy Blvd but there are a few places over on Calumet. Don't know anything about the hotels, but the area is no biggie.

As far as Hammond goes, stay away from the hotels in the 80/94 & Cline Ave. area, pretty much an annex of Gary. JMHO.

in south hammond/highland on 80/94 and kennedy ave. i hear those are decent since they tore down the damn low income housing across the street from there, but anything else would be more along the lines of merrillville off of 30/65

Now in terms of your OP. Will you be staying at a hotel for the next 6 months? I take it you will have a car to get to/from. How much driving do you want to do to get to/from BP.

Don't take this as a rasict comment but tyring to understand who you are and give you info on areas you may be comfortable at/in. So with that statement out the way. Are you white, black, asian, latino, etc. Any race or races in general you don't want to see, live near, etc?

About the boardest overview I can give you of NWI rigth now is the further N you are in NWI the more crime/poverty level you have. Whiting being an exception to this to a certain point. Hammond, East Chicago & Gary have the most issues. As you move south from there to Griffith & Highland & Scherville you do better. Munster again is an odd-ball (less crime gang-banger style), etc..

There is a Hampton Inn & Suites in Munster, IN next to the hospital.

Which is another option but now you are adding a little bit of driving time to your comutte NOT a lot just a tad since the highway is not next to you.

Munster, IN BTW is one of the richest per capital towns in all of Indiana.
Have you considered a room for rent type of deal perhaps?


What are your interest BTW? The casinos do have hotels as well. (Not sure I would personally stay there, not an issue of safety more just noise and the environment.) Will you be going "home" during the weekend?

I'm white family man that wants to make a bunch of money before teotwaki. I don't have time for much except work sleep food do it again. I want quiet and peace. I'm thinking about just driving south from the job for exactly one hour and looking around. Thanks for the welcome.

Well if you want peace & quiet then perhaps you may want something along the I-65 highway.

From BP you can get onto CLINE AVE (via EC), then 80/94 highway and then I-65. They all connect and you won't have to deal with the city/town streets at all with the exception of the streets right outside of BP that take you thru the steel mill and then onto the highways. There is NOTHING on those 2 streets apart from the mills and 1 sub sandwich shop.

Hammond isn't bad, depending on where....

I work for the company that does the scaffolding, painting, insulation etc at BP. So if you have any problems with that stuff, ahhh, really I don't care.

No offense intended, but that's nuts. There are plenty of fine places within 20-30 min. No reason at all to drive that far EVERY day. It's one thing if you already lived there with your family and the BP job was great and you didn't want to uproot them, but for just you...just for a while...find something closer. You'll thank yourself later.

You see how the 80/94 and 90 highway make a triangle and have Whiting, Hammond, East Chicago, and Gary inside of it. Stay OUTSIDE of that triangle and you will be "safe" [1].

[1] Bad things can happen anywhere so "safe" is not really "safe" per say.

East Chicago has gang related problem. They are active in 90% of the city. Shootings are typically on the south side between rival gang members. To date that I know of only gang members have been "hit" (ie. no bystanders since the shootings are typically at night or veyr ealrly morning). As a white man you won't fit in too well in EC. It is mostly a black and latino city at this point with a minority of white (polish) elderly people.

Hammond is a mix of whites, blacks and latinos of all ages. They do have issues like EC but IMO it's "safer" than EC if you are an outsider. Southern Hammond is still a nice place. Near the Purdue area it's very quiet.

Since you are only going to be here temp I like others have said is to move a little further south. Note you don't want to go too far south becuase traffic in the area is a BEAR!

Look at the map again
80/94 is the main artery for EAST/WEST traffic thru the midwest. Lots and lots of semis and it's typically backed up or slow going thru the area.

I-65 is a little better but again this is the "road 2 Indy".

You are going to become very familar with Cline Ave as that goes to BP and the steel mill and during morning rush and/or evening quiting time that road is packed. Granted it still moves but it's packed.

The other option is US-41 (non-highway) that will take you DIRECTLY into BP but that is a streetlight road and you will go thru all the cities. It is a zoo during rush hour. Whiting to Griffith during rush hour is a 45 min drive to travel 13 miles.

Now if you are that paranoid I'm sure we can hook you up with rambone.


PORTER COUNTY boys do you want to chim in. I know hobart & chesterton are near the 80/94 highway and I have always heard nice things about those 2. Don't know about lodging however.

bunch of hotels right in portage all real close to 80/94 and the toll road

plus a **** load of food and shopping establishments

another +1 to this. granted, i drive from lake village to hammond every day (41 in the morning, 65 afternoons), but that's where my house is. if it was just me staying in a hotel, i would stay much closer.

I find a place in hessville 8 minutes from the refinery. Two buddies of mine will be downstairs and we will be on the same shift.

hessville is trash. I'd stay at the hotels on US 30 1/4 mile west of 41 in Schererville
