It seems that when bills only reference carry on college campus there isn't a lot of public support. This bill has now gone public on SCC pages, which get monitored by college admins and other anti-gun groups. So, there's no doubt they're rallying their troops now.

College students who have their LTCH deserve the right to have it on campus as well, especially when it's their money and tax dollars supporting those buildings. They shouldn't have to risk their education/investment to practice this right. This bill would provide for that. The exemptions mostly refer to places which are already illegal to carry (k-12, etc.)

So, if you're a college student or you have kids that may be in the future, start writing those letters and sending those emails or phone calls.

    Indiana General Assembly - 2014 Session#

These are the people on the Public Policy Committee:

    Members are as follows:
    Chair: Rep. Thomas Dermody
    Vice Chair: Rep. Jack Lutz...
Majority Members: Rep. Edward Clere, Rep. Sean Eberhart, Rep. Matthew Lehman, Rep. Jim Lucas (HB 1018’s Author), Rep. Mark Messmer, Rep. Ben Smaltz, Rep. Timothy Wesco
Ranking Minority Member: Rep. Philip GiaQuinta
Minority Members: Rep. Terri Jo Austin, Rep. Sue Errington, Rep. Karlee Mace

    EDIT:
How to support the bill that would allow campus carry (and carry in lots of other places) :
Look up HB1018 and make sure you know what the bill is.
Write a short, POLITE letter to Representative Tom Dermody. (Address Below) In the letter, ask him to give HB 1018 a hearing in his committee (public policy).
Then, spread the word to any pro-gun organizations that you know of, or just pro-rights groups.

    Representative Tom Dermody
    200 W. Washington St.
    Indianapolis, IN 46204

Hand-written letters actually look better than typed ones. They get READ more often at the state house.

The right to self-preservation doesn't end for a legally armed student when he/she steps foot on state funded property. Virginia tech 2007,numerous men and women were killed senselessly because no one was able to stop the perpetrator and as soon as someone armed (police) responded to apprehend him, the coward shot himself after mercilessly killing dozens. Had even just one student been armed, the students who lost their lives that day may still be alive. There are some things we as gun owners need to rally behind and this is one of them. Legally armed college students are just as responsible as anyone else who has a LTCH and should not be forced to relinquish their rights when they're the ones paying the college/universities bills via their tuition and when said colleges/universities are receiving state funding from our tax dollars. Without the support of the public and other gun owners, this will never pass. We can rest assured that the anti-gun pro gun-control politicians are already rallying against this piece of legislation. This is a step in the right direction for gun rights; colleges/universities forbid everyone from carrying, not just students and with the passage of this bill, everyone with a LTCH could carry on campus and they couldn't prohibit it. This would help everyone, not just college students because it affects other state owned property as well, not just colleges/universities. They wouldn't be able to prevent legally armed citizens from carrying either. Let's get behind this and have our rights recognized.

Passage of this would mean a lot to many college students who are victimized each year due to being prohibited of defending themselves.

This bill would also allow us to carry at the state fair. Now who wouldn't like that?

As we found out this year, you already can carry at the fair. If you get caught the cops just escort you off the premises. Cover it up an don't get caught with 4 guns on you like that guy did.

If this bill passes they wouldn't be allowed to escort you off the premises, they'd have to let you stay because carrying couldn't be prohibited.

well this doesn't help the cause of the bill, but there was a shooting on Purdue Campus this afternoon. I am all for this bill, but legislators will look at this event negatively and say they need to make laws stronger now.

Hopefully it'll go the other way, with most of them thinking "this is why this bill was written, we need to pass it."

That article was posted yesterday by Kirk Freeman here on INGO. I'm not saying it was or wasn't found by the rep you're referring to here, but I do know that several legislators are INGO members.

Thanks for reposting, and yeah, it's a hell of an article.

    Blessings,
    Bill

Idk, I heard the opposite from some IN house legislators today. Apperantly they have noticed that current policies haven't really done what they need to do to prevent something like this and then there is this little gem (this was given to me BY an IN house rep):

I just wrote more letters today. At Indiana State we have one of the strongest chapters in the state and we are urging all students to write as well! This was sent out via our facebook page earlier today.

"We just got off the phone with Rep. Jim Lucas, who authored the bill that would allow us to carry on most state property, including universities.
He says we are running out of time to show our support for HB 1018.
He's asking us to melt the phone lines at the state house and ask for it to get a hearing.

Dial 1 800 382 9841 and ask for Tom Dermody. You may get his legislative assistant Matt, wh...ich is also good. Make a short statement that you would like for HB 1018 to get a hearing, and why.
Keep it short and polite. It's really busy there, and it'll make a better impression if we are considerate of their time.

Thank you all so much for your support! Good luck! And remember, if you get put on hold, don't worry. It's probably a good thing, and means lots of people are calling in."

What is the deadline for this bill before it gets tabled? I have been rallying as much support as I can. I have sent emails and made calls. Trying to get as many friends, family members, fellow students, and anybody I can that is in support of the bill to call. School is the ONLY place I go that I don't carry. I would like to change that. Even if it is a long shot, one step closer would be nice.

Feb. 3 is the last day for House bills to be heard on Third Reading in the House.
Prior to that, they must be heard and voted in committee, that fact reported to the Speaker while in session, and on a subsequent day, heard on Second Reading, any discussion or floor amendments, and then, on yet another subsequent day, they may go to Third Reading.
In practice, this means we have about six days to get our House bills heard.

    Blessings,
    Bill

Thanks for the clarification Bill-o-R. ... I wasn't sure of the exact procedure / time line.
(fundamentals I got and saw some of these deadlines listed on the IGA site)

Is it similar for the Senate Bills as well? - to me, it looked like it but not all timeline steps were clear.
    Thanks.!!!

You are welcome, good sir. Deadline for the Senate side is Feb. 5, but otherwise, all is identical. In both cases, they can agree to suspend the rules and hear something same-day, but in practice, that is not likely to happen. I've also seen a bill questioned on Third Reading sent to a "Committee of One", usually the author, to amend some point prior to acceptance by the house in which it's being heard at the moment. I'm sure there are other procedural tools that can be used as needed, as well.

    Blessings,
    Bill
