Back in the day, DNR used to propagate Multiflora Rose and give plants out free to landowners for habitat creation. As invasives go, it's a very good food source for quite a few bird species. I read somewhere that Mockingbirds will occur year-round in some areas specifically because there are...
I remember in the book Blackhawk Down, the author talked a lot about his interviews with Somali people who belonged to the different factions that were fighting for control. He said that all of the people would begin by saying something to the effect of "All we want is peace." but when asked...
Back in the day, all softeners and water heaters were "hard-plumbed" into the system, since they were expected to last 20+ years. I think it says something that now they're mostly connected with flexible "quick-connect" lines.
I bought a Kinetico Model 60 in 1996. It has dual resin tanks and an impeller meter so it uses no electricity and recharges based on the actual gallons used. With the dual resin tanks, you can recharge any time, because it switches to the new tank and recharges the other one, with no...
I’ve read that softener resin lasts much longer if you’re on well water, since chlorine breaks it down. When the resin in mine quit working, it didn’t clog, it just stopped softening. I got new resin online and changed it out myself. Works fine again.

I was involved in a discussion about animal control issues a while ago, particularly about stray dogs. There was a lot of talk about the problem and a lot of talk about possible solutions, and one person said "The thing is, if we were the kind of society/culture that had the ability to solve...
Many people confuse Choke Cherry (Prunus Virginiana) with Black Cherry (Prunus serotina), since they look very much alike when the trees are smaller.
If it's on mostly open ground or a grown-up old field and has many trunks it's probably a Choke Cherry.
If it's in a woods and if it has one...
I was wondering what fertilizer is best for small seedling tomato and pepper plants. Last year I used miracle grow in water and I think I didn't dilute it enough and/or just used too much. When they started to show signs of yellowing, I watered them heavy with water, then re-potted them. Most...
We lived in a rented farmhouse for a few years when my kids were little. Landlord said the house was built just after turn of the century. After a bad storm, the 70 year-old steel roof failed when the fasteners broke from the peeled pole rafters. The steel roof was still intact, it was just...
